How to fill in the EX-15 form (step by step)

The EX-15 form is the official document to apply for a Spanish NIE. Here is how to fill it in correctly, field by field. Our tool pre-fills it automatically to avoid mistakes.

  1. 1. Personal details

Surname, first names, date and place of birth, nationality and passport number, exactly as on your passport.

  2. 2. Reason for the request

Tick the economic, professional or social reason. For a property purchase, it is the economic reason.

  3. 3. Address

Your address in Spain if you have one, otherwise your address abroad.

  4. 4. Place and date

The city where you file the request (consulate or police station) and the date.

  5. 5. Signature

Print the form and sign it by hand before your appointment.

The 790 form (código 012) and the fee

In addition to the EX-15 form, the NIE application requires paying an administrative fee via the 790 código 012 form. It is a separate document from the EX-15.

  • Amount: around 9 to 12 € depending on the consulate.
  • Paid at a Spanish bank (or the indicated counter) before your appointment.
  • Keep the payment receipt: it is required on the day you file.

FAQ

The questions you ask

Everything you need to know about the NIE, the EX‑15 form and the application process.

Ask a question
What is the Spanish NIE?+

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a tax identification number assigned by Spain to any foreigner who performs economic or professional acts in Spain. It is mandatory to buy property in Spain.

Why do I need a NIE to buy property in Spain?+

The NIE is required for any notarial act in Spain, including signing the preliminary sale agreement (contrato de arras) and the final purchase deed with the notary. Without a NIE, you cannot legally acquire real estate in Spain.

How do I get my NIE from France?+

From France, you need to book an appointment at the nearest Spanish consulate, complete the EX‑15 form, gather supporting documents (passport, proof of economic reason) and attend in person. Our tool lets you pre-fill the EX‑15 form for free.

What documents do I need at the consulate for NIE?+

You need: the completed and printed EX‑15 form, your original passport + photocopy, proof of your economic reason (e.g., sale agreement), the 790 código 012 tax payment form (approx. €10-15), and 2 recent passport photos at some consulates.

How long does it take to get the NIE?+

The timeline varies by consulate. Generally, the NIE is issued the same day as the appointment for non-residents. Some busy consulates (Paris, Lyon) can have waiting times of several weeks for an appointment, so plan well in advance.

Is the EX‑15 form free?+

Yes, the EX‑15 form itself is free: you can fill it in and print it here for free. However, the NIE application requires payment of an administrative fee (form 790 código 012, approx. €9-12) before your consulate appointment.

Can I apply for NIE directly in Spain?+

Yes, if you are physically in Spain, you can submit your NIE application at an authorized police station (comisaría) or foreigners' office. You will also present the completed EX‑15 form. The consulate procedure from France is often faster if your purchase is imminent.
